Below is the measuring guide for measurements needed to make your piece fit perfectly.
What Tools Are Essential for Accurate Body Measurements?
To ensure precise measurements, you'll require a set of indispensable tools: a measuring tape, a full-length mirror, and a pen and paper. Alternatively, you may opt for a length of string.
Where Do You Begin When Taking Body Measurements?
Start by wearing your underwear and your everyday bra to ensure that your bust measurements accurately represent your typical body shape. Stand before a full-length mirror and securely hold the measuring tape against your body.
What Measurements Should You Record?
If you've been involved in sewing for some time, you've likely observed that most sewing patterns typically specify three fundamental measurements for determining your size: bust, waist, and hip. Additionally, you may want to note some supplementary measurements to assist with fitting.
-
Bust: Measure around your body across the fullest part of your bust, often corresponding to your nipples. Ensure the measuring tape remains straight as you record the measurement to prevent it from dipping at the back. Verify this in front of a full-length mirror.
-
Waist: Measure around your body at the narrowest part of your torso. If you struggle to locate your waist, stand tall and lean to one side – the point where your body bends indicates your waist. Using a piece of string or ribbon can sometimes help find the correct position.
-
Hip: Measure around your body at the fullest point of your hips or bottom. It's usually lower down than you might think and not around the top of your hip bone.
What Other Body Measurements Might Prove Useful?
Once you're comfortable measuring your bust, waist, and hips, there are additional measurements that can be valuable. Some of these are specific to certain garments, such as trousers, so you may not need them all right away.
-
Upper Bust: This measurement is taken above your bust, keeping the measuring tape straight and just below your armpits. It can be useful for adjustments to bodices for those with larger or smaller busts.
-
Upper Hip: Measured around 2-3 inches below your waist, this measurement is valuable for making trousers and skirts that finish above the hip.
-
Neck: Knowing your neck measurement is crucial for garments with polo necks or collars. Measure all the way around your neck, above your collarbone.
-
Shoulder: The shoulder measurement is useful to determine if you have wider or narrower shoulders than the pattern. Measure from the point where your shoulder meets your neck to the top edge of your shoulder.
-
Arm: Measuring the full length of your arm from the top edge of your shoulder to your wrist is useful for sleeve and cuff adjustments.
-
Wrist: Measure around your wrist just above your hand; this is useful for adjustments to sleeve hems and cuffs.
-
Front Bodice: Measure from your clavicle (the meeting point of the two neck bones) to your waist down the center front of your body, avoiding the bust. This is crucial for altering bodice length.
-
Back Bodice: Measure from your nape (the back of the neck where the skull meets the neck) to your waist down the center back of your body. This is vital for making changes to bodice length.
-
Waist to Knee: Useful for altering skirt and shorts lengths, measure from your natural waist to just above your knee, remembering to include seam allowance for a hem.
-
Inside Leg: This measurement is essential for sewing trousers. Measure from your crotch to your ankle.
-
Waist to Ankle: For sewing trousers and maxi dresses, measure from your natural waist to your ankle.
